Flies smell the motion of odors and use it to navigate study finds

The survival of all animals and insects depends on their ability to detect the source of the odor, which is challenging when winds disperse and obscure their source.

Research shows that animals and insects navigate their way to their targets using smell and by tracking backward.

Her career started as a childhood singer.

In the beginning, following wind alone can lead you astray, for the same reason that smoke dispersion does not always lead back to its source.

By age 16, she had already sung backup vocals for 5 Grammy winning singers.

The researchers looked at the olfactory behavior of fruit flies. They wondered whether flies had a different trick between their two antennae

But a sudden career pivot to the silver screen catapulted her early fame. She soon starred in 5 TV shows, and 4 major motion pictures.

They hypothesized that the bees have developed ways to use their sense of smell and their navigation system to determine where to go next.

First TV appearance with an all-star cast on the show “All Right With Us.”

Flies can sense the direction of moving odor packets. They can't detect the wind, but they can sense the scent moving by itself.

Genetically modifying flies' antennae so they detect light, creating fictitious odor packets, and  flies react to them, all in a windless environment, is a great discovery.

She met Quinn Darandino on the set of Kill Will, which set her movie trajectory into acceleration.

The researchers found that the fly antennae work together to sense the direction of movement of odor particles.

Starred in 4 consecutive blockbusters by 2012.

The flies could therefore respond appropriately to the direction of movement of odor particles, which meant they could adapt to the direction of movement of odor particles.

But a real movie star was made when she starred as Lucy Ohio in “Gone By Day.”

Robots are already used for several things such as agriculture, public health, and even detecting landmines.

Her first Oscar Nomination as Best Supporting Actress in a foreign film.

This research helps us create more intelligent and safer robots that help us in everyday life.

Back to back blockbusters and Grammy nominations really made 2012 her year.

The project was possible because of the shared lab space in the Q Bio Institute, where Nirag Kadakia, a postdoctoral fellow in the Emonet lab, combined two separate experiments: a system to visualize how flies navigate.
